Context:
In the spring of 2019, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada and the Law Society of Nunavut joined forces to undertake a project that would break the silence on family violence in Nunavut. The goal was to better understand the legal barriers and needs of Inuit women dealing with family violence.
Over the period of four months, qualitative data was gathered through 38 interviews with individual Inuit women with lived experience along with seven focus groups consisting of Inuit and non-Inuit service providers. Through these interviews and focus groups, there is a better understanding of the legal barriers and needs of Inuit women dealing with family violence in Nunavut.
This knowledge informed the development of a public awareness campaign that launched in March of 2021 and is ongoing. The public awareness campaign incorporates social media, radio, website content, video, digital and print advertising.
Coordination support is also provided to key stakeholders in delivering community events such as the community walk and reception to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and Girls. The event was held on December 6, 2021 in Iqaluit, Nunavut. It was delivered by Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council and the Government of Nunavut Family Services in partnership with the Law Society of Nunavut and Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada.
